Did you know that your liver is one of the largest organs in your body? It plays a central role in all the metabolic processes in our body to either expel the harmful toxins which arise from the processed and fried foods that we consume daily, or transform them into harmless substances. In addition, it keeps our body healthy by regulating our cholesterol levels, cleansing our blood, as well as help us fight infections and diseases.

To ensure that our liver is kept in a tip-top condition, here are some foods which may help us cleanse our liver:

1. Water

As an indispensable staple in our daily lives, water needs no fancy introduction. H2O aids in keeping the body well-hydrated and helps to cleanse the liver by flushing out toxins from the body. This reduces the overall workload needed for the liver to carry out its other functions. The ideal daily water consumption should be around 2 liters a day, and you can certainly obtain some of these fluids from fruits, juices and soups.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric contains a natural polyphenol known as curcumin that has exhibited anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, antifungal, anti-bacteria and anti-cancer activities. It is used widely as a herbal medicine for liver ailments, digestive disorders to reduce flatus and urinary tract infections.

3. Beetroot

Beetroot, also known as beets, is a rich source of phytochemical compounds such as carotenoids, phenolic acids and flavonoids. Its high anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties have shown to protect the liver against diseases and cancer. While most people are unaccustomed to consuming raw beets, they can be easily juiced into a delectable beverage to reap all its nutritive goodness.

Try FP’s Liver Scrub (beetroot, apple, carrot, celery, ginger) for a two-in-one solution with both beet and carrot!

4. Leafy Green Vegetables

Containing high amounts of chlorophyll, green leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach soak up environmental toxins from the blood stream. These vegetables are able to neutralize heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides, offering key protection to the liver. They can be eaten raw, cooked or juiced, plenty of options to help you to easily attain your recommended daily goal of 2-3 servings of vegetables. Start incorporating these antioxidant powerhouses in your diet today to prevent liver cancer and diseases.

5. Carrot

This versatile vegetable is high in beta-carotene which assists the liver in flushing toxins out of the body. Additionally, a diet that is high in carrots also improves our eyesight and prevents night blindness. FP’s Smooth Skin (organic carrot, celery, apple, cucumber) is a good source of carrot juice on the go.

Besides the incorporation of the food recommendations listed above, it is also important to remember that eliminating substances such as alcohol as well as foods high in fat and sugar, will also aid in improving liver function.

Happy Cleansing! :)
